In today’s data-driven world, the demand for professionals skilled in data is skyrocketing. Roles like Data Analyst, Data Scientist, and Machine Learning Engineer offer many opportunities. However, many young people in Madagascar face significant challenges when trying to enter this field. The Global Shapers Antananarivo Hub organized the “Shape Your Data Career” event at the American Corner Antananarivo to address this. This four-week workshop, which ran from January 27th to February 17th, 2024, aimed to guide and equip students and young professionals with the tools they need to start their journey into data careers.
How “Shape Your Data Career” began
Back in 2021, while finishing my master’s degree, I knew I wanted to work in data. However, I had more experience in software engineering and was unfamiliar with data-related careers. Despite this, I managed to land a job as a Data Analyst, where I learned most of what I needed on the job. This experience opened my eyes to the broad range of career paths in data.
Later, I worked as an Analytics Specialist for an international NGO, where my manager’s passion for data inspired me even more. This deepened my love for the field and motivated me to continue pursuing a career in data.
As I gained more experience, I realized that many young people in Madagascar were likely in the same position I had been—eager to start a career in data but unsure of where to begin. In 2023, I started teaching data and business intelligence to university students in Antananarivo, which strengthened my desire to help others explore opportunities in this growing field.
Later that year, as a member of the Global Shapers Antananarivo Hub, I proposed the idea of “Shape Your Data Career” to the team. They embraced the idea, and together, we made it a reality.
The Workshop: “Shape Your Data Career”
The first workshop was held from January 27 to February 17, 2024, in partnership with the American Corner Antananarivo. While we could only accept 20 participants, we received over 150 applications. The participants are aged 18 to 25, hailing from diverse backgrounds such as computer science, mathematics, and economics. We also ensured gender balance, with an equal number of men and women participating.
The program was broken down into four weekly sessions:
- Week 1: Introduction to Data Careers
Participants were introduced to various roles in the field, from Data Engineer to Data Scientist. They learned about the skills needed for each position and how their academic backgrounds could align with these careers. - Week 2: Soft Skills Training
This week emphasized the importance of soft skills like communication. Participants also learned how to craft a strong CV and avoid common mistakes when applying for jobs. - Week 3: Practical Data Analysis Session
In week three, participants got practical experience by working on real-world data tasks using Google Colab. They developed essential skills in data analysis. - Week 4: Discussion with Data Professionals
We hosted a panel of four data professionals—a Data Engineer, a Data Entrepreneur, and two Data Scientists—who shared their experiences and answered participants’ questions. This session aimed to inspire and offer guidance on navigating a career in data.

Overcoming Challenges and Looking Ahead
While the “Shape Your Data Career” workshop was successful in introducing young people to data careers, we faced several challenges. The biggest hurdles were covering costs like internet access and speaker arrangements. Moving forward, securing funding and building partnerships will be crucial to continue and expand the program.

The birth of Databridge Madagascar
After the success of “Shape Your Data Career,” I realized the need for more long-term support for young people in Madagascar. This inspired me to launch Databridge Madagascar, an independent initiative designed to close the data skills gap in the country. Through Databridge Madagascar, we aim to provide continued learning and mentorship opportunities for aspiring data professionals.
Our programs include:
- Monthly Sessions: Regular talks and workshops led by experienced data professionals.
- Data Bootcamp: A multi-week, immersive workshop for more in-depth learning in data analysis and related fields.
- Mentorship: Connecting participants with both local and international data professionals for ongoing career guidance.
To make Databridge Madagascar a success, we need a strong network of professionals who are willing to offer their expertise as speakers and mentors. We also seek partnerships and financial support to help with logistical needs.
How You Can Get Involved
We invite you to help shape the future of data in Madagascar. Whether you can contribute as a speaker, mentor, partner, or volunteer, your support will be invaluable in closing the data skills gap and empowering the next generation of data professionals.
